Introduction

The city of Fernandina de Jagua, which is now known as Cienfuegos, was created in 1819 on the grounds of an ancient Indian chieftainship, which, with its enormous, remote and well-protected bay became a major centre for piracy in the Caribbean.

The solid fortress built by the Spanish colonial authorities in 1745, long before the city was founded, still stands today. The city, elegant and very typical of a seaside town, has interesting areas inspired by neoclassicism and unique monuments such as

the Palacio de Valle, the Teatro Terry, the Prado and the Parque Martí. Nearby attractions include spectacular Sierra del Escambray, stunning beaches such as Rancho Luna along the provincial coastline and the breathtaking depths of the island shelf.

Moreover, Cienfuegos shows an intense sea fating tradition, offering visitors not only the warm waters of Playa Inglés, Playa Rancho Luna, or Guajimico, among other places suitable for diving, but alsothe natural charms of the Escambray mountain rage and the soothing effects of the mineral-medicinal waters of the Ciego Montero spa.

El Nicho, This marvelous natural site rises 500 meters above sea level. After a march of nearly 50 kilometers through the mountains and with a beautiful landscape in sight one enters the adventure of El Nicho, amid waterfalls, caves, natural lakes, and paths.
